Nice review. I haven't read this book, but now I will. I gave Long Emergency a cursory look (I plan on killing myself if I can't have hot showers, so I'm not too interested in the minutiae of the post shower epoch). While I'm not qualified to argue with Kunstler's facts in Long Emergency, I sense that he yearns for the Collapse a little too hard to be entirely objective. One area where my personal experience didn’t jibe with his assertion is Southern California which he damns with hoards of radical Mexicans of the MECHA ilk. I gotta say, I listen to these radical dudes on KPFK regularly, and they sound pretty toothless and non-representative of the majority of SoCal Latinos. Yes, the demographic pressure of Mexico is a huge problem peak oil or not, but his fixation on these radical Mexicans made me question his overall project. Peak Oil Mexicans just don't scare me as much as they seem to scare him.

Maybe I’m blinkered by middle-class naivete, but having survived WWIII and Y2K, I think there are as many dangers in overinvesting in the end of the world as there are in expecting twinkies and iPhones for ever more.

So maybe Kunstler’s fiction is the perfect way to get into his world.

I had soured on Kunstler as a pundit for a while, but I think his predictions for peak oil and the collapse of the financial markets are about to start. Of course, I also thought that 3 years ago. As a pessimist, I do think it's bound to happen pretty soon.

I can't wait to read the novel, though.
